Mountain Creek Lake Dam Improvements and Reclassification

Improving and Reclassifying Mountain Creek Lake Dam
PeoplesQuigley | DCCM has partnered with Callaway Resort & Gardens since 1999 on a variety of projects across the 2,500-acre property, which includes 14 regulated dams. Mountain Creek Lake Dam, a 1,500-ft long, 38-ft high structure with a storage capacity of 3,200 acre-feet, underwent inspection in 2018 to identify maintenance needs and improvements. Upon review, it was determined that a downstream structure impacted by Category I regulations was no longer in use, allowing the dam to be successfully reclassified from Category I to Category II. This reclassification provides the resort more flexibility to implement modifications at a lower cost, as Category II dams are less strictly regulated by the GA DNR EPD – Safe Dams Program. Additionally, downstream gabion-lined channels protecting the creek from erosion were damaged during storm events. PeoplesQuigley | DCCM assessed the damage, developed an action plan, and prepared construction documents while assisting with permitting to support emergency repairs. These efforts enhanced dam safety, operational flexibility, and the resilience of downstream channels.
